Ease Arthritis Pain

Things You Can Do To Ease The Pain Of Arthritis

Irony of the day: arthritis medication with a cap that old people can’t get off, because of their arthritis.” – Kelli Jae Baeli

Arthritis-SmoothTransitionsAZArthritis is a condition that very often affects us as we age…due to everyday wear and tear, over time the cartilage that surrounds our joints becomes weak and begins to cause pain, stiffness, and inflammation in our joints. In fact, according to the CDC, about 1 in 4, or about 58.5 million adults in the United States have been diagnosed with arthritis.

So although it is a common problem that is the foremost cause of pain and discomfort worldwide, there are some natural things we would like to suggest that you can try to ease your pain.

First of all, if you, or someone you love, is experiencing pain and stiffness in your joints, and you haven’t already, consult with your physician to help you manage your pain.

ArthritisRelief-SmoothTransitionsAZBut there are some things you can do in your everyday life, to try on your own, that could help you relieve your joint pain, and enjoy life more…

Arthritis Pain Relief Options…

  • Stay active – Staying active seems to be a common treatment for many of the things that affect us as we grow older, but it really is a key factor in staying healthy as we age. With arthritis, it is important to keep your joints moving, which will make the surrounding muscles grow stronger and more supportive. Great, low impact, activities you could participate in are:
    • Walking
    • Dancing
    • Yoga
    • Cycling
    • Swimming
  • Have balance between activity and rest – Too much of a good thing isn’t necessarily a good thing…so don’t overdo your activities. Your body needs time to rejuvenate, so take a day or two off. Also, if you’re experiencing a lot of pain during an activity, don’t push through the pain, it’s better to give yourself a break until you’re feeling better.
  • Maintain a healthy weight – It’s easy to put on a few extra pounds, and those pounds will add pressure on your joints. So use a healthy diet and your fun activities to keep your weight down.
  • HydrateArthriticRelief-SmoothTransitionsAZDrink plenty of water – The cartilage that surrounds your joints is between 70-80% water. So keeping well-hydrated, especially when exercising, can improve your joint health. It may seem like a lot, but you should be drinking 8 – 8oz. glasses of water a day. To make it easier, carry a water bottle around with you wherever you go.
  • Over the counter creams and pain relievers – Both can help relieve joint pain, but keep your doctor informed about what you’re doing, he/she may have some other helpful advice for you.
  • Recommendations from the Arthritis Foundation – Different parts of your body will benefit from different, specific, therapeutic exercises or in home treatments. The Arthritis Foundation has provided a great guide to help you get relief when arthritis is causing you pain.
