Ease Senior Move Anxiety

How To Ease Senior Anxiety On Move Day

Youthful pleasures last until old age, and then they become old treasures.” – Anthony T. Hicks

Stressedsenior-SmoothTransitionsAZMoving is stressful, no matter who you are or what your age, but it can be especially challenging for seniors. Moving involves a significant change in routine, which can cause anxiety and confusion for seniors. The stress is real, and is often referred to as Relocation Stress Syndrome or Transfer Trauma. Some of the ways it can manifest are: insomnia, depression, agitation, frustration and short-term memory loss.

If you or a loved one is a senior preparing for a move…

Here are some ways to ease anxiety and make the transition smoother.

  1. Plan ahead One of the best ways to ease anxiety on move day is to plan ahead. This means creating a detailed plan for the move, including timelines, tasks, and resources needed. Start planning as soon as possible and break the process down into manageable steps. Consider hiring a professional moving company to help with the logistics of the move.
  2. SeniorPlanningMove-SmoothTransitionsAZInvolve the senior – Involve the senior in the planning process as much as possible. This can help them feel more in control and less anxious about the move. Ask for their input on decisions such as where to move and how to decorate their new space. Encourage them to pack their personal belongings and help make decisions about what to keep and what to donate or discard.
  3. Communicate with family and friends – Staying in touch with family and friends can be a great source of support during the move. Make sure to keep them informed about the moving plans and ask for their help if needed. Plan regular check-ins before and after the move to help your senior feel connected and supported.
  4. Create a comfortable space – Creating a comfortable and familiar space in the new home can help ease anxiety. Try to replicate as much of their previous, familiar space as possible, including furniture, decorations, and personal items. Familiar surroundings can help your senior feel more at ease and reduce feelings of disorientation.
  5. Maintain routines By maintaining regular routines as much as possible you will help your senior feel more comfortable during the move. It’s important to stick to regular mealtimes, exercise routines, and sleep schedules. This can help reduce feelings of anxiety and provide a sense of stability during a time of change.
  6. SeniorRelaxing-SmoothTransitionsAZTake breaks – Moving can be physically and emotionally exhausting, so it’s important to take breaks when needed. Encourage your senior to take breaks and rest when they feel tired or overwhelmed. Taking a short walk or nap, or doing a relaxing activity can help reduce anxiety and provide a sense of calm.
  7. Seek professional help – If your senior is experiencing significant anxiety or depression, it may be helpful to seek professional help. A therapist or counselor can provide support and guidance during the move and help manage their emotions. Also, a doctor or nurse practitioner can provide medication or other treatments to help manage anxiety symptoms.

Moving can be a challenging experience for seniors, but with proper planning and support, it can also be a positive and exciting transition.
